PhD Position for “Improving Protein Expression in E. coli with Cleavable Solubility Tags” within the EU Project Greener RPP (f/m/d) - limited for 3 years-2213505

**THE POSITION**

The project Greener RPP (Recombinant Protein Production) aims to generate more sustainable platforms for high-value recombinant protein production, especially industrial enzymes and therapeutic proteins (biotherapeutics). It is a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) Doctoral Network project coordinated by the University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG) and involves extensive collaborations between 7 academic and 6 industrial participants.

Research will take place in biopharma process development laboratories at Boehringer Ingelheim RCV GmbH & Co KG in Vienna. During the PhD thesis two secondments (temporary visits of partners of the consortium) are intended. Graduation and academic supervision are foreseen at one of the academic partners.

**Tasks & responsibilities**
- Planning, organization and performance of wet-lab experiments (Upstream, Downstream and Analytics)
- Data analyses and interpretation
- Close interaction with collaboration partners of the project consortium
- Writing of reports, protocols and publications
- Presentation of research findings at internal meetings, international conferences and within the project consortium

**Requirements**:

- Successfully completed studies (Diploma or MSc) in natural sciences with focus on biotechnology, molecular biology or microbiology
- Practical experience in state-of-the-art molecular biology techniques requested
- Practical experience in recombinant protein production using microbial (Escherichia coli) expression systems and/or expertise in protein purification using chromatographic methods is a plus
- Specific Eligibility Criteria valid at time of recruitment on the H2020 Marie Skłodowska Curie program:

- The applicant has to be within the first four years (full-time equivalent research experience) of his/her research career and has not been awarded a doctoral degree
- Mobility rule: The applicant may not have resided or carried out main activity (studies, work, etc.) in Austria for more than 12 months in the 3 years prior to the recruitment date
- Strong interest in performing experimental lab work and hands-on laboratory experience
- Innovative and aim-oriented performance, high flexibility and motivation
- Structured and team-oriented working style in multi-disciplinary teams
- Excellent communication skills and very good command of English; a good command of German is desirable
- Travel abroad for training purposes is part of the program

For this position we offer an interesting salary package considering your expertise and personal competencies as well as your professional experience. We are obliged by law to state the minimum salary according to the collective agreement, which amounts to € 39,625.32 gross per year (full-time) for this position, whereby an overpayment is possible.
