Scientific Co-Director for Life Sciences

The Austrian Academy of Sciences (OeAW) is seeking an exceptional scientist and visionary leader to serve as the Scientific Co-Director for Life Sciences at the AITHYRA Research Institute for Biomedical Artificial Intelligence. The Co-Director will play a crucial role in shaping the institute's vision, establishing a competitive research program, and recruiting faculty and staff.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Develop and implement a research strategy for the institute, focusing on cutting-edge biological research and AI-driven approaches.
  • Collaborate with the Director to establish a strong research program, attracting top international talent and securing funding.
  • Recruit and manage a team of researchers, ensuring a diverse and inclusive environment.
  • Develop and maintain partnerships with leading international institutions, fostering collaborations and knowledge exchange.
Requirements:
  • PhD in biochemistry, molecular biology, structural biology, genetics, or a related field.
  • Experience as a PI of a lab with a track record of cutting-edge research in biological fields, particularly molecular biology and biochemistry.
  • Good knowledge and understanding of modern machine learning and a track record of using and developing new ML methods for biological applications.
  • Excellent publication record and a strong track record of attracting competitive grants.
  • Leadership and team management skills, with experience working with multidisciplinary collaborators.
Desirable Qualifications:
  • Experience with research commercialization, technology transfer, and creation of start-up companies.
  • Experience in the biotech industry, particularly in drug design.
  • Track record of attracting industrial funding.

The successful candidate will be recruited with tenure as a scientific group leader, while the function of Co-Director will be for 10 years, renewable after an evaluation. The institute will be set up in close partnership with the universities in Vienna, with joint affiliations and professorships supported by the universities.
