Attendance would be 5 days per week from 8am - 4pm with a 30-minute lunch break.
Working as a member of the Senior School Team, the aim of the Senior School Careers and Pathways Counsellor is to assist students and their parents to gain access to the widest possible range of career, employment and further education opportunities appropriate to their needs.
All members of the team have the responsibility to implement and model the school's Vision and Values with the aim of improving student learning outcomes creating an environment conducive to learning that promotes:
engagement, motivation and belongingimplementing the School Strategic Plan and Annual Implementation Planan active commitment to continuous school improvement through the effective management, leadership and development of their program and school goalsWith other members of the Senior School Team, the Senior School Careers and Pathways Counsellor shares collective responsibility to develop an effective team and promote collaborative practice among staff.
ResponsibilitiesCounsellingProvide a Careers Counselling service to all Senior School students needing career direction, offering them information and explanations of multiple pathways.Assist with Course Selection for Years 10 and 11 students.Counsel students as referred by the Senior School and the Wellbeing teams.Work to place all early school leavers in appropriate courses, TAFE, employment or other secondary schools.Provide tertiary course counselling for Year 12 Students prior to and after the release of ATARs and first round offers.Have an understanding of the diverse university selection procedures and pre-requisites including entrance tests in Australia and worldwide.Alert students to opportunities both in and outside school that will help them improve their resumes and consequently their chances of gaining entry to hard-to-get-into courses.Ensure students have information on extra-curricular programs and encourage them to become involved in areas that they will enjoy and that will make them more able to access scholarships and competitive tertiary courses requiring interviews.Ensure that students are aware of the changing nature of work, newly emerging careers and the qualities and skills that are highly regarded both by tertiary institutions and employers.Provide up to date information on courses, careers and employment opportunities to the Balwyn High School community.Mentor and support the Careers Advisor (Year 7-9), providing advice on the running of the Year 7-9 Careers Program.Coordinate and lead the delivery of material for parents and students at VTAC information evenings.Support the Senior Team to coordinate and organise careers and pathways programs including Work Experience (Year 10) and Careers Day (Year 11) and to inform VCE students of pathways and tertiary opportunities.Support the Alumni Program Coordinator with the organisation of alumni presentations to current students, including Career Insights Sessions.Participate in the annual review of VTAC data with the Senior School team.CommunicationUse Compass NewsFeed, the school newsletter and social media to provide information to the Balwyn High School community relating to courses, careers and employment opportunities.Provide access to Careers Newsletters and other careers documents to students.Ensure students are informed about speakers and have access to the best information relating to study options, employment and careers.Liaise with appropriate outside agencies in order to properly advise students. E.g. Employment agencies, youth access centres, Universities, TAFE Institutes, the CEAV and professional associations.Liaise with parents where appropriate to ensure students have the best advice relating to study options, careers and employment.Deliver career information sessions to the school community such as the VTAC evening.Speak at Year Level Assemblies to provide students with important careers news.Email Careers Newsletters to all staff so that subject teachers can encourage students to attend relevant events and seminars.Meet regularly with the Assistant Principal (Senior School) to discuss and report on events and other careers matters.Regularly communicate with the Senior School team regarding student updates.AdministrativePurchase, collect and develop materials relating to study options, careers and employment.Set up and maintain a register of past students with data relating to their study histories and/or chosen pathway to use as a source of knowledge for current students.Organise the ordering and storing of careers guides, VTAC guides and other material relevant to course selection, careers advice and employment options.Maintain a library of relevant books, pamphlets and videos in the Careers Centre.OtherOther duties as required by the Principal.Who May ApplyIndividuals with the aptitude, experience and/or qualifications to fulfill the specific requirements of the position.
