Senior Biomedical Scientist, Diagnostic Cytology and Fresh Tissue Lead Closing date: 10 December 2025 An exciting opportunity has arisen for a highly motivated individual to join the Histopathology Department as a Senior Biomedical Scientist. Cambridge University Hospitals Histopathology department is one of the largest in the country with over 130 non‑medical staff supporting over 50 consultant histopathologists. We provide site‑specific reporting and support many regional and national programmes. We are looking for people who want to push the boundaries of current practice and join a transformational programme of work that involves adoption of new and innovative technologies and work practices. Digital pathology has already been adopted and we seek to capitalize on the opportunities it offers. The department prides itself on staff development and offers many training and education opportunities for staff of all grades. Main duties of the job Practice as a Section Leader in the Histopathology Department, undertaking a wide variety of automated and non‑automated, complex analytical procedures that require a high level of manual dexterity, prioritising and organising the workload to ensure continuity and efficiency of the service, demonstrating expertise in histopathological techniques. Supervise and manage a team within the laboratory. Participate in the on‑call and weekend rota. Lead the development of laboratory workflow processes and extended working hours for the routine laboratory. Participate in the Mohs' Clinic and Thyroid FNA clinic. Implement new technology and processes. Prepare histological and cytological specimens, on rotation through the department, with the main focus in diagnostic cytology and fresh tissue. Ensure that all aspects of ISO 15189 and external governing bodies are achieved and maintained, in accordance with local and national guidelines. Participate in technical, quality and training and education activities as required by the department within scope of practice. Microscopically examine and report crystals in synovial fluids. Person Specification Qualifications MSc Cellular Pathology or IBMS Higher Specialist Diploma in Cellular Pathology or Management, or working towards or equivalent IBMS Accredited Biomedical Science Degree or equivalent HCPC registration as a Biomedical Scientist IBMS Certificate of Competence IBMS Specialist Diploma in Cellular Pathology or Diagnostic Cytology Experience Considerable experience in all areas of routine and histopathology Considerable experience in ancillary testing of histopathology and cytology specimens Considerable experience in preparing fresh tissue for intra‑operative, whole genome sequencing, immunofluorescence Considerable experience of diagnostic cytology preparation and quality control of specimens Experience at leading/supervising people Experience of training Biomedical Scientists and Biomedical Support Workers Has previously contributed to an on‑call rota Ability to make decisions under pressure in a lone‑working environment Experience in Mohs Experience in FNA preparation and assessment for adequacy Experience of working in the NHS Reporting of crystals in synovial fluids Knowledge Demonstrate knowledge of a wide range of histopathology procedures and practices Demonstrate knowledge of a wide range of diagnostic cytology procedures and practices Knowledge of Quality Management Systems Knowledge of Pathology IT systems Understands the role of diagnostic histopathology and cytology in a clinical setting Knowledge/performance of risk assessments Knowledge and performance of audits Skills Demonstrable interpersonal skills – can work as part of a team or independently Ability to concentrate for prolonged periods of time High degree of manual dexterity to perform complex laboratory techniques Able to prioritise workload to meet needs of the service Ability to supervise less experienced staff, including supporting the training of staff Ability to organise and allocate work to less experienced staff to meet the needs of the service Organisational skills Credible and effective leadership qualities Additional Requirements The ability to understand and behave at all times towards patients, visitors and colleagues according to the Trust values of safe, kind, excellent.
