The Cancer Genetics Counsellor will work as part of the Cancer Genetics Service to provide cancer genetics assessment, diagnosis, testing and counselling services with patients and/or family members of the Cancer Services. This position will provide support to individuals and families to minimise the impact of a cancer genetic diagnosis, provide equitable, accessible and confidential genetic counselling support and education to individuals, families, health professionals and community members throughout all sectors of South Western Sydney Local Health District. The successful applicant will work with the Cancer Genetics team at Liverpool Hospital, closely liaise with and support non‑genetics doctors in a multidisciplinary team, and be able to communicate effectively with other relevant services outside the Hospital (e.g. Pathology). This position will suit someone who is keen to further their learning and skills as a genetic counsellor within the area of cancer genetics, enjoys working within a diverse population and one of the fastest growing cancer genetics services in the state. What You’ll Be Doing The Cancer Genetics Counsellor will work as part of the Cancer Genetics Service in partnership with Cancer Services to provide cancer genetics diagnosis, testing and counselling services with patient and/or family members of the Cancer Services. This position will provide support to individuals and families to minimise the impact of a cancer genetic diagnosis. Provide equitable, accessible and confidential genetic counselling support and education to individuals, families, health professionals and community members referred engaging with the South Western Sydney Local Health District Cancer Genetics Service. Where You’ll Be Working Liverpool Hospital, founded in 1813, is the major health service for south‑western Sydney, offering a wide range of state‑wide services including critical care and trauma, neonatal intensive care, and brain injury rehabilitation. As a key teaching facility for UNSW Sydney and Western Sydney University, it provides extensive clinical services, including emergency care, cancer treatment, paediatrics, and mental health services. The hospital features 23 operating theatres and has a capacity for 877 beds. The ongoing $830 million redevelopment as part of the Liverpool Health and Academic Precinct is transforming the hospital into a global hub for medical innovation. This redevelopment will expand clinical services, enhance research and teaching facilities, and introduce state‑of‑the‑art equipment and amenities. Demonstrated experience in providing genetics services or working within a genetics unit or related area Ability to work independently with minimal supervision Ability to work in a team environment in a tertiary health setting, including but not limited to working with medical specialists, pathology, administrative and allied health staff Understanding of the needs of cancer patients, including psychosocial needs and treatment planning particularly as it relates to genetic testing Need more information?
