Aboriginal and Islander Education Officer Join to apply for the Aboriginal and Islander Education Officer role at Department of Education, Western Australia The Role The Aboriginal and Islander Education Officer (AIEO) is a support role that assists teachers in delivering planned education programs and encouraging a supportive and inclusive learning environment for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students. The AIEO plays a vital role in strengthening the connection between our school and the Aboriginal community. This position supports the development of educational programs that reflect both the cultural and educational needs of Aboriginal students and their families. The AIEO provides mentoring and pastoral care to encourage student participation, engagement, and success at school. They also work collaboratively with staff to support and advise on the management of students at risk, including assisting with the design and implementation of behaviour support plans. In addition, the AIEO helps to maintain accurate records, communicate effectively with parents and carers, and promote positive relationships between families, students, and the school community. Additionally, the AIEO plays a key role in making Aboriginal culture visible, valued, and celebrated throughout the school. They facilitate community involvement in the development of school policies relating to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture, conduct interviews and home liaison visits to strengthen family‑school partnerships, and support teachers in embedding Aboriginal perspectives across the curriculum. The AIEO also assists with the preparation and maintenance of learning environments that reflect and promote Aboriginal culture, helping to create a school community where cultural identity, understanding, and respect are at the heart of learning. Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of culturally responsive strategies that support the wellbeing, engagement and learning of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students. Demonstrated effective written and oral communication skills, including the ability to interact with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, and liaise with parents/caregivers, families, teachers and community members and assist teachers to understand Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students’ needs. Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of building culturally safe environments for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Demonstrated effective organisational skills that will assist in the delivery of culturally responsive education programs and subsequent feedback and evaluation to teachers or allied health professionals.
