Instrument Flight Procedure Chief Designer Department of Defence – South Melbourne VIC The Instrument Flight Procedure (IFP) Chief Designer leads the development, documentation, and maintenance of IFP standards. The role ensures compliance with ICAO, ADF, and allied standards, and utilizes geospatial and aeronautical data systems to design and validate instrument flight procedures. The IFP Chief Designer supports the unit’s quality assurance processes, manages risk assessments for obstacle clearance and terrain analysis, and ensures accuracy and integrity of the datasets supporting Defence aviation operations. Additionally, the role provides expert guidance to designers, facilitates training programs to maintain competency in procedure design tools, and contributes to capability development initiatives that enhance ADF mission planning and execution in complex and contested environments. The IFP Chief Designer operates independently and reports directly to the Commanding Officer of the Aeronautical Information Service – Air Force (AIS‑AF), and supports the Production Manager and the Terminal Procedures Team Leader. About our Team Aeronautical Information Service – Air Force (AIS‑AF) is an Air Force unit responsible for the provision of timely, accurate, and relevant Aeronautical Information Publications (AIP) that support ADF operations globally, with a focus on Australia, Asia, and the Indo‑Pacific region. The majority of work is conducted in an office environment at Victoria Barracks – Melbourne, utilizing proprietary design tools, geospatial databases, desktop publishing software, and standard Microsoft applications. Has a solid understanding of aviation/flight planning terminology, typically attained through relevant experience in an aviation‑related role and/or studies. Demonstrates resilience, personal drive, and a focus on enabling others in support of Defence capability. Eligibility Applicants must be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance at “Negative Vetting Level 1”. Key Duties of the Position The IFP Chief Designer leads the development, documentation, and maintenance of IFP standards, ensuring compliance with ICAO, ADF, and allied standards. The role demands technical authority in the design and validation of instrument flight procedures using geospatial and aeronautical data systems.
