Australian Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry – Sydney NSW Who we are The Animal Biosecurity Branch develops biosecurity policy and provides technical and scientific advice for the safe importation of animals and animal products, including aquatic animals and their products, using science-based risk analysis. It also provides scientific and technical support to gain, maintain and improve access for the export of Australian animals and their genetic materials. The branch provides policy and technical advice on marine pest biosecurity. The branch comprises four sections: International Strategy and Technical Assurance, Biologicals and Avian, Livestock, Companion and Zoo Animals, and Marine and Aquatic Biosecurity. The Marine and Aquatic Biosecurity Section develops and implements policies and provides technical and scientific advice on the importation of live aquatic animals and their products for human consumption and contributes to the management of disease risks associated with the import and export of live aquatic animals for aquaculture, research and public display. The section is also responsible for leading national policy development for marine pest prevention and establishing and contributing to enhanced supporting arrangements to reduce marine pest risks. The key duties of the position include: leading a small team in the development and implementation of aquatic animal biosecurity policy, programs and projects developing and delivering evidence-based policy and technical advice for the import of aquatic animals and their products in line with biosecurity legislation and international standards supporting the team in delivering biosecurity and market access outcomes across imports engaging with stakeholders at the domestic and international level including competent authority evaluations preparing high quality briefings, correspondence and submissions Eligibility What we are looking for Knowledge and experience A detailed technical knowledge of the biological sciences, marine sciences and/or animal sciences with (desirable) knowledge on aquatic animal disease threats to Australia. Knowledge of domestic and international aquatic animal production and processing systems, including surveillance and diagnostic requirements that support safe trade in aquatic animals and their products. Import risk assessments and policy development within Australia's biosecurity framework. Experience building and sustaining productive relationships with internal and external stakeholders. Experience in managing a small team to support team cohesiveness to collectively achieve team goals. Market access, trade policy and government business.
