Community Engagement Volunteer

Nature Conservation Council of NSW – Sydney NSW According to government data, each year more than 66,000 hectares of trees, grasslands and other wildlife habitat are destroyed across the state and replaced with concrete and paddocks. That’s thousands of hectares of homes for koalas, greater gliders, endangered birds and other Australian critters destroyed in a single year. We are looking for a passionate volunteer to join our campaign team who can help us connect with and inspire others in order to grow the movement calling for stronger laws and policies that will stop land clearing and protect nature. ABOUT THE VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY The volunteer would join our small campaign team and be directly involved in the day‑to‑day community organising and policy advocacy work we undertake in service of biodiversity across NSW. In 2023 the NSW Labor Government pledged to stop land clearing. At the moment, NSW is reviewing the laws that control biodiversity and land management. These changes could benefit hundreds of community groups across the state who are fighting to protect nature every day. We need help from a self‑motivated and enthusiastic volunteer who can help connect, inspire and mobilise new audiences and existing supporters to push for change. Working closely with the conservation officer, the core responsibility of the volunteer is to raise the profile of the issue by developing relationships and networks with relevant stakeholders. This includes: Identifying and coordinating meetings with potential stakeholders Helping prepare and deliver presentations (in‑person and online) to community groups Providing support to grassroots community groups Drafting campaign materials and documents Maintaining contact records/database BENEFITS Develop sought‑after skills and experience in the fields of community organising, environmental advocacy, research, and policy development. Deepen your understanding of the environmental sector and nature laws in NSW. Build valuable professional and interpersonal relationships within NSW’s environmental movement, and beyond. Contribute meaningfully to positive environmental change and community empowerment in New South Wales. Be part of a friendly, supportive, and dynamic environmental campaigns team. REQUIRED SKILLS Strong interpersonal skills; we’re looking for somebody who enjoys connecting with others and forging meaningful relationships. Someone that can understand and respect different perspectives - but find a common goal. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Capacity to prepare and deliver presentations in person and online. Willingness to travel throughout greater Sydney to attend meetings/events as required. DESIRED SKILLS / VALUES A background (or interest in) environmental science, science communications, policy and law. Strong alignment with Nature NSW’s mission to protect nature in NSW. Experience (or interest) in community organising and stakeholder management. Willingness and initiative to learn and try new things. A motivated and reliable self‑starter. Note: While this is an unpaid position, volunteers are not expected to cover any out‑of‑pocket expenses. NCC will reimburse pre‑approved expenses associated with activities undertaken as part of the volunteer role. See the position description attached below for further information about this role. #J-18808-Ljbffr
