Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Community Worker – Mornington Island Empower Communities to Improve Mental Health and Wellbeing Join a dedicated team committed to improving mental wellbeing and reducing harm from alcohol and other drugs across North West Queensland. In this permanent full‑time role, you’ll work closely with individuals, families, and communities to deliver culturally responsive support and promote healthier, more connected lives. Mornington Island Hospital is a remote Level 2 hospital under the Rural and Remote Clinical Services Capability Framework. The facility provides 24‑hour acute inpatient and accident‑and‑emergency care. Staffing consists of a medical officer and registered nurses on each shift 24 hours a day, with administration support, cleaners and maintenance workers. Mornington Island Hospital consists of 8 general medical beds and 4 emergency department beds. Mornington Island is home to world‑renowned Indigenous artists. While on the island be sure to visit MIART – the Mornington Island Art gallery which features local Indigenous paintings, hand‑crafted items and workshop spaces. About The Role As part of the (ATODS) team, you’ll play a key role in delivering prevention, education, and support services that make a meaningful difference to individuals and communities. You will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to improve access to care and strengthen the capacity of local health services. In This Role, You Will Support individuals, families, and groups through culturally appropriate AOD and mental health programs. Provide cultural assessments to improve service access, engagement, and outcomes. Work with community stakeholders to deliver education, prevention and early intervention initiatives. Collaborate with health workers, primary care providers and hospital services to strengthen local capacity. Facilitate and support self‑help groups, life‑skills programs and health promotion activities. Contribute to quality improvement and professional development across ATODS programs. Uphold cultural safety, equity and the values of the North West Hospital and Health Service in all aspects of your work. Requirements Under s25 of the Anti‑Discrimination Act 1991, the incumbent must be Indigenous to the Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander Community. Pre‑employment screening will be conducted for the successful applicant, including criminal history checks and Blue Card checks. This is a VPD risk role and may require evidence of vaccination or immunity to: Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella, Pertussis, Hep A/B. A period of probation may apply. Interested?
