Cyber Governance & Security Lead – Queensland Government (New Team Build) Location: Carseldine, QLD Contract: 6?Month Engagement (5 Years worth of work in the pipeline) Rate: Competitive, aligned to experience A newly established team within a Queensland Government Department is seeking an experienced Cyber Governance & Security Lead to help shape and uplift the organisation’s security posture across cloud, data, and emerging AI programs. This is a unique opportunity to influence strategy from day one, build governance frameworks that will underpin future digital capability, and guide a branch committed to secure, ethical, and modern technology delivery. About the Role As the Cyber Governance & Security Lead, you will develop, manage, and maintain the security policies, standards, and procedures that support a new branch within the Customer Technology Division. You’ll contribute to strategic security planning, ensure compliance with government and industry standards, and proactively manage security risks across a diverse technology landscape. This role suits someone who thrives in greenfield environments, enjoys shaping governance from the ground up, and is confident advising senior stakeholders across cloud, data, and AI initiatives. Key Responsibilities Lead the development, implementation, and uplift of cyber governance frameworks, policies, and procedures. Build and refine governance structures for AI programs, ensuring alignment with Queensland Government regulations, ethical AI principles, and privacy standards. Provide expert advice on the evolving cyber threat landscape and its impact on customer technology solutions. Oversee compliance with ISO27001 and other relevant standards. Provide expertise in secure system design, risk assessment, and threat modelling. Conduct regular audits and reviews of AI programs, new developments, and system releases. Ensure security is embedded throughout the SDLC. Maintain clear, accessible documentation of governance processes, security protocols, and compliance measures. About You You bring a strong blend of cyber governance expertise, cloud security knowledge, and an understanding of modern data and AI environments. You’re comfortable shaping frameworks, advising senior stakeholders, and ensuring compliance in regulated settings. Qualifications & Experience 5+ years in cyber governance, risk management, and compliance. Strong understanding of AI program risks, ethical AI principles, and data privacy requirements. Familiarity with Queensland Government cybersecurity standards, ACSC Essential Eight, and ISM. Experience conducting risk assessments and identifying vulnerabilities in AI and cloud environments. Proficiency in secure SDLC methodologies. Demonstrated ability to design and implement governance frameworks, workflows, compliance tracking mechanisms. What is in it for you?
