Westmead Hospital Visiting Medical Officer (until 30 June 2027) – Acute Surgical Unit To apply for this position, please complete an online application by clicking on the link below: CLICK HERE TO APPLY Applications are invited from suitably qualified medical practitioners for the position in the Western Sydney Local Health District. This position will be primarily located at Westmead Hospital within the Department of Acute Surgical Unit. Successful applicant will be required to provide consultant‑led services to Acute Surgical Unit (ASU) and Intestinal Failure Service (IFS) at Westmead Hospital. The successful applicant will provide safe and essential clinical cover in the following areas: Participate in ASU consultant roster and provide leave consultant cover for ASU. Manage quality and safety matters for ASU and IFS, including but not limited to conducting regular morbidity and mortality meetings. Participate in the 1 in 4 Westmead IFS consultant roster. Co‑lead and attend the monthly multidisciplinary IFS outpatient clinic attendance. Acute Surgical Unit at Westmead Hospital is a tertiary referral service for all general surgical emergency within the WSLHD. It is a consultant‑led service with the consultant available on‑site providing the service. Intestinal Failure Service at Westmead Hospital provides the inpatient care for those needing enteral and parenteral nutrition during the Westmead hospitalisation as well as those patients needing Home Total Parenteral Nutrition. Essential Requirements for Appointment Possess or be eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia and Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (General Surgery) or equivalent as provided for in the Health Insurance Act 1997. Must have Australian Citizenship or Permanent Australian Residency. Must hold a current NSW Environment Protection Authority licence (if applicable). Possess Post Fellowship training in a Gastrointestinal Surgery specialty. Possess Higher Degree (Master or PhD) in Surgery. Possess experience in Quality Improvement projects in Surgery. Sound clinical knowledge and clinical competence in Acute Care Surgery (General Surgery) and Surgical management of surgical feeding tubes and total parenteral nutrition (TPN) demonstrated through successful clinical practice in an environment appropriate to the requirements of the position. Demonstrate ongoing professional development in the specialty of Acute Care Surgery (General Surgery) and management of surgical feeding tubes and total parenteral nutrition (TPN). High level interpersonal and communication skills. Demonstrated ability working within a multidisciplinary team. Experience and involvement in quality assurance activities and evidence‑based best practice. Demonstrated commitment to teaching and supervision. Applicants must have Australian Fellowship/Specialist Registration. Conditions of appointment are in accordance with the Public Hospitals (Visiting Medical Officers Sessional Contracts) Determination 2014. Selection Criteria Qualifications and credentials required for core scope of practice in General Surgery. Evidence post fellowship training in Gastrointestinal Surgery and experience in Acute Surgery. Evidence of post‑graduate Higher Degree in Surgery and experience in Quality Improvement projects in Surgery. Demonstrated skills and attitudes appropriate for practice as a Senior Medical Practitioner including: Proven ability to work effectively and harmoniously with medical and other health services colleagues as part of a multi‑disciplinary health care team. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with patients and colleagues. Excellent organisational, supervision and collaboration skills with demonstrated ability to build respectful relationships. Maintaining and developing knowledge, skills and professional performance to the level required for contemporary practice. Experience and involvement in quality assurance activities and translation of research into practice to improve patient safety and quality. Demonstrated ability to manage time and resources efficiently and contributing to the effectiveness and efficiency of the health care system. Demonstrated aptitude for clinical leadership which is evidenced by: Systems thinking and risk‑taking aptitude. Commitment to self‑care and personal development. Capacity to maintain personal integrity, tolerate stress and demonstrate resilience. Commitment to building relationships, leading, and developing others. Results and outcome focused.
