As a University Assistant Prae Doc in the field of East Asian Economy and Society (EcoS), you will become an integral part of our team, under the leadership of Professor Frank. This position entails a wide range of responsibilities, including management, teaching, and research, offering you a comprehensive and engaging experience to shape your professional future in academia and beyond.
**Your personal sphere of influence**:
At EcoS, our primary focus revolves around East Asia as a region. We embrace a distinctive "Area Studies" approach, combining diverse methodologies and perspectives from both the social sciences and humanities. Our research is firmly grounded in the practical realities of the field. In our philosophy, theories and methods serve as essential tools, not ultimate goals. Within this framework, one of our key areas of expertise lies in North Korea, which we have established as the European Centre for North Korean Studies (ECNK).
EcoS is an integral part of the Department of East Asian Studies, comprising approximately 100 colleagues, each specializing in China, Japan, or Korea. As a Prae Doc at EcoS, rest assured that you will not be isolated; you will find a vibrant community of peers within the Department.
We place immense importance on fostering a collaborative and respectful atmosphere. English is our official working language, and our MA program in East Asian Economy and Society is conducted entirely in English. Every year, we select 30 new students from a highly competitive pool of over 100 international applicants, resulting in a diverse and truly international atmosphere, which is one of our defining features.

**Your future tasks**:
You actively participate in research, teaching & administration, including:
- Research in the area of East Asian Economy and Society, with a focus on North Korea.
- Finalize your dissertation agreement within 12-18 months.
- Work on your PhD dissertation.
- Hold courses independently within the scope of the provisions of the collective bargaining agreement.
- Take on administrative tasks in research, teaching and administration.
- Manage the EcoS and ECNK websites.
- Manage our external communication, including social media and interaction with our ECNK fellows and EcoS student representatives.
**This is part of your personality**:
- Completed Master's degree or Diploma in Social Sciences.
- Background in Political Science and/or Development Studies.
- Background in East Asian Studies.
- Proven willingness and ability to contribute to the work of the ECNK.
- Experience in academic writing.
- Excellent command of written and spoken English (C1 Level) is a must.
- Ability to use at least one East Asian language for research is a must.
- Good command of German is an advantage.
- Skills in Web design (e.g. Typo 3) highly welcome.
- Experience with data bases and event organization is an advantage.
- Experience in empirical and qualitative research is an advantage.

The employment duration is 4 years. Initially limited to 1.5 years, the employment relationship is automatically extended to 4 years if the employer does not terminate it within the first 12 months by submitting a non-extension declaration.
