Associate Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice

This position is located within the Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice Section (CPCJS), Division for Treaty Affairs (DTA), United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) in Vienna, Austria. The Associate Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice Officer will report to the Chief of the Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice Section (CPCJS).
**Responsibilities**:
Within limits of assigned authority, the Associate Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice Officer will be responsible for the following tasks:
- Provide professional support for the activities of the Section in the areas of crime prevention and criminal justice, by carrying out various substantive, organizational and coordination tasks, as well as advocacy through social media;
- Assist in the development and negotiation of new normative instruments (i.e. standards and norms) in the area of crime prevention and criminal justice;
- Assist in the preparation of draft programme and project ideas and documents for technical assistance in the areas of criminal justice reform, with particular focus on access to justice, justice for children, penal reform and alternatives to imprisonment, gender in the criminal justice, and victim support as assigned;
- Provide substantive support for the implementation of projects; participate with others, in programming, needs assessment and other technical missions, where necessary;
- Assist the UNODC Field Office Network and colleagues at Headquarters in the organization and/or delivery of a variety of specialized technical services for governments, e.g. advisory services, expert group meetings, and training seminars;
- Assist in providing substantive inputs and/or prepare the substantive and programmatic reports to the Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice, ECOSOC, General Assembly, Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice and other legislative and technical bodies as well as their subsidiary bodies; participate and assist in the substantive and administrative servicing of the meetings of those bodies;
- Assist in the drafting of a variety of written outputs, such as background papers, correspondence with governments, working papers, mission reports, analyses, briefings, presentations, policy proposals and documents, including parts of regular and ad hoc reports, studies, summary reports, manuals, guides, toolkits, etc;
- Collect and compile relevant background data and information on crime prevention and criminal justice;
- Assist in the development and preparations of technical tools (i.e. handbooks, model laws, etc.) and training modules on crime prevention and criminal justice;
- Perform other work related tasks as assigned.

Education
An advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in law, international law, criminology, international relations, human rights, political science or related field is required. A first-level university degree in similar fields in combination with additional two years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
Work Experience
A minimum of two years of progressively responsible experience in law, crime prevention or criminal justice OR the successful completion of the Young Professionals Programme Examination (YPP), the United Nations National Competitive Recruitment Examination (NCRE) or the General Service to Professional Examination (G to P) is required.
Work experience with the United Nations system or similar international organization in one or more thematic areas of: violence against women, violence against children, treatment of victims, or access to legal aid is desirable.
Experience in drafting substantive and programmatic reports in any of the afore mentioned areas for governing bodies is desirable.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.
