TAS (initially established as Australia’s first Defence cooperative research centre) is an innovation R&D house uniquely equipped to deliver world-leading robotic and autonomous systems with artificial intelligence (RAS-AI) to enable trusted and effective cooperation between humans and machines. TAS projects are defence-driven, industry-led and research-based, delivering sustainable disruptive autonomous systems capability to the nation, driven by our ambition to transform how Defence fights and wins. The current portfolio of projects is extensive, spanning operational domains and key enablers, with strong growth in the scale and scope of the portfolio expected in the years ahead.Projects align to our “smart, small and many” vision, exploiting AI, miniaturisation and new methods of manufacturing to develop low-cost autonomous systems that can be deployed at scale to create unprecedented mass and combat weight advantages, leading to greater freedom of manoeuvre for the commander. Systems developed through projects not only deliver game-changing capabilities, but also adhere to the legal, regulatory and ethical frameworks governing Defence, ensuring trusted autonomy aligned to social expectations and national and international obligations.Projects grow sustainable sovereign Australian industry capability, strengthen industry-academic partnership, promote research-translation, and act as change agents, providing Defence with new tools to “shape, deter and respond”. We are committed to the fail-fast approach, accepting measured but significant innovation risk in our program, and adapting effort, direction and investment accordingly to maximise impact for Defence and the nation.Projects are commercially sensitive, and so limited information is available to external audiences. The successful candidate will lead the rapid development of a common command and control system for Defence. The system will be used to support structured experimentation of developmental robotic and autonomous systems in operational scenarios, with an initial focus on an integrated common C2 system for multi-robot operations in the land domain.You will work with the TAS Chief Technology Officer Team and other important stakeholders, including our Defence partners, to scope the product architecture, development environment, team recruitment and implementation plan, after which you will be required to oversee the software development process, manage the software development team, and guide the project toward short-term delivery ( TAS is headquartered in Brisbane, but remote work will be considered for the right applicant.The role is scoped for a full-time applicant for 12 months, with potential for extension. The successful applicant will ultimately take on an expanded role across two other programmes due to commence in the next financial year, forming a core part of the growing TAS delivery team. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute during the early phases of a potentially significant expansion of TAS’ technical program.Remuneration
Remuneration for this position is set at $180,000 plus superannuation, dependent upon the experience of the successful applicant.About You
You must have a results-driven and proactive approach to development. To meet rapid development timeframes, you must be comfortable working collaboratively, making prioritisation decisions, and communicating risk. You are familiar with, or willing to learn about, command and control concepts and technologies as they apply to autonomous systems, heterogeneous teams, and Defence activities.You will demonstrate flexibility in your contribution to development and deployment efforts and must be capable of ready discussion with stakeholders to ensure delivery in accordance with expectations. You should have sufficient experience to support independent work and the ability to make informed decisions on behalf of the software team to achieve project objectives.The following requirements are mandatory:Experience in software architecture specification and software engineering management.Experience with rapid/agile development processes.Experience with hardware/software integration.Experience with third-party product integration.Experience with collaborative software development environments.Reside in Australia.Currently hold, or be eligible to hold, an AGSVA security clearance at NV1.The following requirements are desirable:Experience in one or more of the following: distributed software applications, networked applications, middleware, system integration, user interface design.End-to-end software lifecycle experience (concept to deployment).Familiarity with software sustainment concepts.An understanding of command and control functions and architectures, relevant standards and protocols.Familiarity with Defence experimentation or Defence operations.Application
