Government Contracts Attorney / Government and Government Relations Attorney in Hobart, Tasmania Job Title: Principal Legal Officer, Commercial Law Job Responsibilities: The Principal Legal Officer (PLO) in the Commercial Law Section is a subject matter expert responsible for supervising and providing guidance to a team of senior legal officers and legal officers. The PLO personally manages sensitive or complex legal matters and ensures tasks are completed effectively. The role involves navigating complex legal issues through effective stakeholder engagement, clear communication, and subject matter expertise. The PLO adopts a pragmatic approach to problem‑solving and delivers exceptional customer service to clients. PLOs are also responsible for leading a team, developing staff, setting goals, and driving performance through effective performance management. They delegate work appropriately and measure performance. In collaboration with three other PLOs in Commercial Law, the PLO manages workflow, reporting, and contributes to team and department meetings. They work closely with Senior Executive Service (SES) to ensure appropriate briefing, escalation, and support for their team. Education and Experience Information: Essential qualifications for the role include a degree in law from an Australian university or a comparable overseas degree recognised in Australia for admission to practice. Candidates must have a Practising Certificate or be eligible to attain one, along with at least three years of post‑qualification experience. The ideal candidate will have specialised knowledge and experience in commercial law advisory work, preferably including government procurement and contracting, grants, and property. High‑quality management and leadership skills are essential for effective management and development of senior legal officers and legal officers. Strong technical legal advice writing, second counselling, and research skills are also required. Additionally, sophisticated relationship management, communication, and negotiation skills are necessary to develop productive working relationships with internal and external stakeholders and provide excellent client service. The ability to work under pressure and manage competing priorities within tight timeframes is crucial. Salary Information: The classification for the Principal Legal Officer position is set at a salary range of $157, to $177,, plus % superannuation. This salary applies to full‑time employment, with part‑time positions being pro‑rata. Additional Information: The role is ongoing (permanent) and full‑time, with the possibility of flexible working arrangements in accordance with the Enterprise Agreement and operational requirements. Applicants suitable for the role but not offered the current vacancy may be placed in a merit list or pool for up to 18 months to fill similar vacancies across various locations. Eligibility for the position requires Australian citizenship and the successful candidate must obtain and maintain a Negative Vetting Level 1 (AGSVA) security clearance. Additional clearances, such as Employment Suitability Clearance (ESC) and Onboarding Check, may be required depending on specific circumstances.
