Government and Government Relations Attorney / Government Contracts Attorney in Launceston, Tasmania Job Title: Principal Legal Officer, Commercial Law Job Responsibilities: Principal Legal Officers (PLOs) in the Commercial Law Section are subject matter experts who supervise and second counsel lawyers within their team. They personally manage matters of a more technical or sensitive nature, ensuring tasks are finalized and issues are driven forward. PLOs are adept at navigating complexity through effective stakeholder engagement, clear communication, and subject matter knowledge. They employ a pragmatic approach to problem-solving and provide exceptional customer service to clients. In their leadership role, PLOs are responsible for developing staff, setting goals, and driving performance through effective performance management. They appropriately delegate work and measure performance. The PLO will work collaboratively with the other three PLOs in Commercial Law, managing workflow, reporting, and contributing to team and Department meetings. They will also work closely with Senior Executive Service (SES) to ensure appropriate briefing and escalation, and to support their team. Education and Experience Information: Essential qualifications for the role include: A degree in law from an Australian university or a comparable overseas degree recognized in Australia for admission to practice. Practising Certificate or eligibility to attain one. At least three years' post-qualification experience. The ideal candidate is expected to have specialized knowledge and experience in commercial law advisory work, preferably including experience in government procurement and contracting, grants, and property. Strong management and leadership skills are necessary for the effective management and development of senior legal officers and legal officers. The candidate should possess high-quality technical legal advice writing, second counselling, and research skills. Sophisticated relationship management, communication, and negotiation skills are essential to develop productive working relationships with internal and external stakeholders and provide excellent client service. The ability to work under pressure and be agile, flexible, and responsive to managing competing priorities and tight timeframes is also required. Salary Information: The classification for the Principal Legal Officer is between $157, and $177, plus % superannuation (part-time pro-rata).
