The R&D Manager is responsible for managing a diverse portfolio of Hort Innovation research and development investments, with a strong focus on Breeding and Productivity. This role ensures the delivery of high-impact, world-class R&D outcomes that drive innovation and profitability across the Australian horticultural industry. Reporting to the Head of Production R&D, the position plays a critical role in achieving Hort Innovation’s Strategic Plan and Industry Investment Plans. Roles and Responsibilities Drive research initiatives that deliver new knowledge, tools, and technologies addressing priority issues for horticultural industries, ensuring social, environmental, and economic sustainability. Oversee the full project lifecycle—from scoping and tendering to contracting and delivery—while maintaining best-practice project management standards, risk mitigation, and cost control. Identify and develop cross-sector opportunities in Breeding and Productivity to support long-term grower profitability and industry competitiveness. Build strong relationships with growers, industry representatives, delivery partners, government agencies, RDCs, and internal teams to ensure collaboration and alignment. Manage intellectual property throughout projects, ensuring adherence to Hort Innovation’s IP policy and contractual obligations. Contribute to business-wide R&D initiatives, process enhancements, and innovation strategies to optimize program outcomes. Experience and Capability Degree in Agriculture or Science, plus 5+ years’ industry experience. Expertise in horticulture R&D, especially breeding and productivity. Familiarity with research tools, trends, and project management. Commercial outcomes focus with knowledge of MERI frameworks. Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills. Ability to manage diverse research investments and drive implementation. Proactive, resourceful, and problem-solving mindset.
