The Chief Heritage and Culture Officer is a key member of the Executive Leadership Team (ELT), responsible for leading and supporting the Heritage and Ranger programs. This role ensures the effective delivery of heritage surveys, cultural monitoring, and sustainable land and sea management while driving financial sustainability for these essential services.
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES & RESULT AREAS
Leadership and Team Development
- Provide strategic leadership to the Heritage and Ranger teams, ensuring alignment with the organisation's strategic objectives and ILUA requirements.
- Foster a cohesive, culturally safe, and high-performing workplace culture that supports the growth and wellbeing of team members.
Heritage Management
- Oversee the delivery of cultural heritage surveys, monitoring programs, and compliance with cultural heritage legislation.
- Engage Traditional Owners and Elders to integrate cultural knowledge into heritage activities.
- Ensure the Heritage Team is equipped with the skills and resources needed to deliver exceptional services.
- Support the Ranger Services Manager in delivering sustainable land and sea management programs, integrating traditional knowledge and modern practices.
- Ensure compliance with environmental regulations and cultural protocols.
- Strengthen the capabilities of the Ranger Team through training, mentoring, and resource allocation.
- Develop and implement strategies to ensure the financial sustainability of the Heritage and Ranger teams, including:
- Identifying and pursuing grant funding opportunities.
- Developing fee-for-service models for heritage surveys and land management services.
- Building partnerships with government, industry, and community stakeholders to secure long-term funding.
- Oversee budgets for both teams, ensuring resources are allocated effectively and financial performance is monitored.
- Collaborate with the CEO and finance team to align financial planning with organisational goals.
Stakeholder Engagement
- Build strong relationships with Traditional Owners, Elders, government agencies, and other key stakeholders to support heritage and environmental initiatives.
- Represent the organisation at forums, meetings, and events to advocate for cultural heritage preservation and land management.
Strategy and Governance
- Contribute to the development of the organisation's strategic plan, ensuring heritage and ranger activities align with long-term objectives.
- Ensure compliance with all relevant legislation, policies, and agreements.
- Monitor and report on key performance indicators (KPIs) for the Heritage and Ranger teams.
QUALIFICATIONS, LICENCES AND EXPERIENCE
- Tertiary qualification in archaeology, anthropology, business management, environmental science, finance, legal, a related field, or equivalent demonstrated experience.
- Experience working with Aboriginal culture, Native Title, heritage, and issues affecting Aboriginal communities.
- Proven experience in strategic planning, governance, and community engagement.
- Demonstrated ability to develop and implement financial sustainability strategies, including securing funding and revenue generation.
- Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, with experience building relationships with diverse stakeholders.
- Business writing and presentation skills, with confidence presenting to senior decision-makers.
- Experience leading and managing multidisciplinary teams, fostering collaboration, and delivering results in fast-paced environments.
