Corporate - Compliance Attorney / Corporate - Contract Law Attorney in Bendigo, Victoria Job Title: Principal Legal Officer, Commercial Law Job Responsibilities: The Principal Legal Officer (PLO) in the Commercial Law Section is responsible for providing expert legal advice and leadership within the organization. The PLO is tasked with supervising and second counselling lawyers, personally handling complex or sensitive legal matters, and ensuring tasks are completed efficiently. They are responsible for leading a team, developing staff, setting goals, and driving performance through effective performance management. The PLO collaborates with other PLOs in managing workflow, reporting, and contributing to team and department meetings. They work closely with Senior Executive Service (SES) to ensure appropriate briefing and escalation, and to support their team. The PLO plays a crucial role in navigating complex legal issues through effective stakeholder engagement, clear communication, and subject matter expertise. They exercise a pragmatic approach to problem‑solving and provide exceptional customer service to clients. Their responsibilities include property law, leasing, major procurements, intellectual property, probity, and funding and grant arrangements. Education and Experience Information: The essential qualifications for the Principal Legal Officer position include: A degree in law from an Australian university or a comparable overseas degree recognized in Australia for admission to practice. A Practising Certificate or eligibility to attain one. At least three years of post‑qualification experience. The ideal candidate should have specialized knowledge and experience in commercial law advisory work, preferably including experience in government procurement and contracting, grants, and property. They should possess high‑quality management and leadership skills, strong technical legal advice writing, second counselling, and research skills. Additionally, sophisticated relationship management, communication, and negotiation skills are essential to develop productive working relationships with internal and external stakeholders. Salary Information: The classification for the Principal Legal Officer position offers a salary range of $157, to $177,, plus % superannuation. The position is ongoing (permanent) and full‑time, with part‑time pro‑rata available. Additional Information: Applicants must be Australian Citizens and will be required to obtain and maintain a Negative Vetting Level 1 (AGSVA) security clearance.
