We are seeking a highly skilled Tigrinya language interpreter to join our team at HIAS. As an interpreter, you will play a critical role in facilitating communication between refugee applicants and our staff.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Contact refugee applicants to schedule appointments and conduct one-on-one interviews to gather basic biographical information.
  • Translate necessary documentation and interpret for and assist casework interviews remotely.
  • Interpret for USCIS interviews and at the Panel Physician, as required.
  • Conduct document verification checks and scan and upload documents into our system.
  • Ensure the accuracy and completeness of files to be presented to USCIS.
  • Attend and participate in team meetings and training sessions.

Requirements:

  • Excellent interpretation and translation skills, to and from English.
  • Strong command of English (written and verbal) and Tigrinya (written and verbal).
  • Ability to keep composed and interpret accurately for difficult/traumatizing cases.
  • Ability to interpret remotely using different technologies.
  • A flexible, mature, and professional attitude to work.
  • Highly organized with strong attention to detail.
  • Proven interpersonal skills and cross-cultural sensitivity.
  • Excellent digital literacy skills, including ability to work with Microsoft Office applications and other databases.
