About the Role Part Time: 0.2 FTE (Full time equivalent) Location: Merrylands Public School School psychologists are essential members of the Department’s school counselling service, working in primary and high schools. They provide counselling and psychological assessment of students to complement and enhance the work of teachers, aiming to strengthen learning outcomes and well‑being, and help families understand and manage their children’s learning and mental health needs. This role offers unique challenges and opportunities for professional development and impactful work on the lives of children and young people. The successful candidate will be based at Merrylands Public School and will have opportunities to work across the lifespan with primary and high school‑aged students. Working in a NSW public school offers the chance to engage with a diverse student population and communities, making a real difference at a critical time in children's lives. School psychologists receive individual professional supervision from the Senior Psychologist Education and participate in group supervision as a member of the broader school counselling team. They collaborate with a range of school communities, colleagues, and outside agencies, leveraging a full range of skills in a supportive, multidisciplinary team. School psychologists are provided with opportunities to participate in continuing professional development and the NSW Department of Education will support completion or maintenance of registration with the Psychology Board of Australia. Merrylands Public School The school has 625 students (including 9 Aboriginal students) and serves a diverse community; 95% of students come from EAL/D backgrounds and 15% have refugee experiences. It offers 23 mainstream classes and five support classes for up to 49 students with mild/moderate intellectual disability and autism. The school employs Real Schools restorative practices to support students and strengthen teacher capacity. Staff collaborate to promote each child’s academic, social, emotional growth, and personal excellence. Students access extracurricular activities in sport, creative and performing arts, debating, and cultural activities. Support unit students also access inclusive sport, CAPA, and therapy programs. Key Accountabilities Provide counselling and psychological services to students, individually and in groups, including appropriate short‑term therapeutic interventions undertaken within the constraints of training, experience, and supervision. Engage with and implement the procedures of the Professional Practice Framework for the NSW School Counselling Service. Work in consultation with the principal, school executive, staff and student supporting services to improve student learning and well‑being outcomes and implement departmental priorities. Contribute to the social, emotional, and academic development of students, and support schools and students with complex behavioural needs. Administer cognitive, social, emotional, and behavioural assessments of students, report on results, and collaborate to improve learning, well‑being, and mental health outcomes. Work collaboratively with learning and support teams, parents and carers, and other agencies to develop appropriate school‑based support for students. Respond as part of a team to assist schools experiencing serious incidents. Refer students and/or their families and carers to other agencies that support student health and well‑being. Essential Requirements Knowledge of and commitment to implementing the Department’s Aboriginal Education Policy and upholding the Department's Partnership Agreement with the NSW AECG to ensure quality outcomes for Aboriginal people. General or Provisional Psychology Registration with active internship with the Psychology Board of Australia. Valid and current Working with Children Check clearance. Current and valid driver’s licence and willingness to travel between work sites. Australian citizenship or permanent residency.
